Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai Calendar of Events

The Shiai is a special event. Testing for rank at Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai is not a one time event. For each student, five criteria are monitored on an ongoing basis: Attendance, Attitude and Spirit, Performance in kata, Performance in kumite, and Dedication to Isshinryu, the Dojo, and the Sensei. The Shiai is an event beginning with a rigorous training seminar followed by the awarding of rank adjustments, if earned, and ending with a celebration by all students. Three Shiai's are held each year in the Spring, Summer, and Winter. Each Shiai is viewed not only as a mark of success, but as a success in and of itself. It is a celebration of continued commitment to overcoming your own limitations.
The Gasshuku is where you can "expect nothing but be ready for anything!" In the Spring of 1998, Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai began hosting an annual, 3 day long Gasshuku for students and invited guests. Typically held during the month of April, the event includes two nights in dorm-type quarters, meals, and a rigorous regimen of intense training seminars touching on all aspects of training. A campfire night and talent show night are held to complete the yin and the yang. Students are expected to turn their focus inward and to learn more about themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, overcoming their own mental and physical obstacles, and their karate. The theme for the 2012 Gasshuku is "The Power of a Positive Winning Attitude."
