A renaissance of empty-hand self-defense took place there during the 19th century.  The long practiced "hand" techniques of the Ryukyu islanders were influenced by the various forms of Chinese martial arts.  Movements were organized to reflect the preferences of those dedicated few who were to become recognized as "Karate Masters."

It is those Okinawan Masters who first organized karate into various systems we westerners have become familiar with (karate was only introduced to Japan in the early 1920's).  In 1964, Tatsuo Shimabuku left Okinawa for the first time to promote and train his students (former servicemen) in the U.S.A.

His teachers were the recognized Masters at the turn of the century and Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in turn passed his knowledge on to his students in the U.S.A.  Since that time, Isshinryu has grown and flourished in the United States and across the world.  Kyoshi Shihan Robert Kristensen is working hard to continue that growth and uphold the traditions of Isshinryu Karate.

Distinction and quality have defined Isshinryu Karate in the United States since the 1950's.  During that time, thousands have enhanced their lives through its practice.  Under the direction of Kyoshi Kristensen (8th Dan), an effective and progressive system of martial arts philosophy and self defense is being maintained here in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex and North Texas with the Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai.  Founded by Kyoshi Kristensen in 1991, the deep, rich traditions of traditional Okinawan Isshinryu Karate stand firm today thanks to his selfless efforts. This year, 2011, Texas Isshinryu Karate Kai celebrates its 20th year in the state of Texas.
